Gaseous Hydrocarbon Leak Detection System

Neptune Oceanographics Ltd stands as a global leader in providing subsea pipeline leak detection services to the offshore oil and gas industry. A core principle of the company is its commitment to research and development, continuously striving to create more effective systems. These advancements aim to improve both cost efficiency and detection success, while simultaneously minimising any adverse environmental impact. Neptune offers a range of subsea leak detection methods, with long-range fluorescence and passive acoustics being the most frequently employed. In specific situations, temperature differential and direct real-time hydrocarbon measurements are also utilised. Historically, subsea pipeline leaks were located by visually observing the fluorescence of dyes using 'black light,' which is unfiltered ultraviolet light. However, this method was hindered by the necessity for high dye concentrations and excellent visibility. In 1999, Neptune revolutionised detection by introducing 'tuned' submersible fluorometers.
These sensors significantly enhanced detection efficiency, eliminating the majority of issues associated with black lights and removing the reliance on visual observation. Further innovation in 2007 saw the successful launch of Neptune Oceanographics' 'Long Ranger' fluorometric sensors. These sensors can detect fluorescent dyes and crude oil remotely, at distances of five metres or more, without the limitations of 'black lights' or the need for sensor contact with the leaking fluid.
